I love this combination of high peaks and deep valleys – the views are simply breathtaking! But what I especially love about this tour is that we also get to see a more authentic side of Madeira, with small villages, local life and the landscapes that are part of everyday island life. _Katrin

Funchal  Start|End (Meeting Point)

OUR ROUTE FOR THE DAY
Start: 09:00 | Duration: 7 hours*

UP, UPPER, MADEIRA!

Hey, welcome to Heartbeat Madeira! Ready to discover some of Madeira's most breathtaking views, taste a few local favourites and experience the island beyond the usual tourist stops? This day has it all: winding mountain roads, spectacular viewpoints, the legendary Pico do Areeiro, the dramatic Valley of the Nuns and, of course, some very good poncha. Let's go! We start at one of our meeting points in the city center of Funchal, at the Lido or in Caniço. Hop into Vivi, and let's explore Madeira together!

Miradouro da Luta: a view to start the day

Our first stop is Miradouro da Luta (1), a beautiful viewpoint high above Funchal. From here, the island opens up in front of us, with the Atlantic stretching into the distance and the mountains rising all around. It's the perfect first taste of the landscapes that are waiting for us today. And also it's time for a little Portuguese ritual: café booster! You can choose between a traditional Bica or a Garoto. Take a moment, enjoy the view and get ready for the mountain roads ahead.

Panorama Mountain Drive: Madeira from above
And now the road becomes part of the adventure. We head into the mountains on one of our favourite scenic drives, following winding roads through Madeira's dramatic interior. Around every bend, another panorama appears — deep valleys, rugged peaks and tiny villages clinging to the mountainsides. No boring motorway here!

Pico do Areeiro: on top of Madeira
Next up: Pico do Areeiro (2), one of Madeira's most spectacular mountain peaks at almost 1,800 metres above sea level. On a clear day, the views are simply incredible, with rugged peaks rising above the clouds and the famous mountain ridges stretching into the distance. This is one of those places where you just have to stop, breathe and take it all in.

Nuns Valley: deep into the mountains
From the high peaks, we make our way down into the heart of the island and the dramatic Valley of the Nuns (3). Surrounded by enormous mountains, this remote valley feels like a completely different world. We'll enjoy the views and tell you a little about the fascinating history and traditions of this special place. We will also have our lunch break here – time to eat, if you are hungry.

Ginja Time! 🍒

Time for a little local treat. The Nun’s Valley is famous for its cherries – and the liquor made out of it. So we stop to try Ginja, the traditional Portuguese cherry liqueur. Sweet, fruity and definitely worth a taste. Saúde!

Cabo Girão: hanging above the Atlantic
Our next stop takes us back towards the coast and to Cabo Girão (4), one of Europe's highest sea cliffs. Standing on the famous glass skywalk, with the Atlantic far below your feet, is quite an experience! The views along Madeira's south coast are spectacular — and yes, this is another one for the camera roll.

Poncha Time!
And finally, the moment we've all been waiting for: Poncha! We finish our adventure at a local poncha bar, where we'll try Madeira's most famous drink the way the locals do it. Freshly made, strong and best enjoyed together. Cheers to Madeira, new friends and another unforgettable Heartbeat!

Please be aware that the weather in Madeira is unpredictable, it has a sub tropical climate and can change unexpectedly during the day. That means sometimes paths or places are closed by the local authorities or it might be too dangerous to do the originally planned trip. In these cases we are doing our best to inform you in time and offer you alternatives, but sometimes we need to be flexible on the tour day itself. What will never be missed is good mood and the beauty of the island - no matter what weather, we are sure you will enjoy this paradise!

The cable car sometimes can be closed due to weather conditions or maintenance that could be carried out.

There could be a waiting time during the cable car activity at Achadas da Cruz, we have no control on it. Some stops might get shorten time to arrive on time to the cable car before its closure.
